My Travel Story

by: Kiki MJ Start Date: Mar 31, 2025 - End Date: Sep 30, 2025
Hi, my name is MJ and I am a queer individual living in Indonesia. Right now, my safety and future are at risk due to the increasing hostility toward people like me. The situation here is becoming more dangerous, with the government tightening its grip on power and cracking down on marginalized communities. I have no choice but to leave if I want to live freely and without fear.

Why I Need Your Help

Being LGBTQ+ in Indonesia means living under constant pressure, discrimination, and fear. But now, things are getting even worse. The government is increasingly controlled by the military, and they are passing a bill that will give the police sweeping new powers.

This new law will allow authorities to:

• Track and monitor people’s phones – No one will have privacy, and the government will be able to track dissidents.

• Delete social media posts – Any content that criticizes the government can be erased without warning.

• Hack and take over accounts – Authorities will be able to seize control of social media accounts and silence voices they don’t like.

For activists, journalists, and marginalized communities—including LGBTQ+ people—this means the government will have even more power to target us. Over the past few years, they have already been:

• Criminalizing dissent – Protestors and activists are being arrested simply for speaking out.

• Kidnapping and disappearing activists – Many who oppose the government have been abducted, never to be seen again.

• Doxxing and surveillance – Authorities and their supporters expose personal information of those who resist, putting them in direct danger.

POLICE BRUTALITY & VIOLATIONS DURING ONE WEEK OF PROTESTS

• Beatings and assaults on protest participants, even against those who are already helpless;

• Encircling medical areas and safe zones;

• Expelling and even attacking medical volunteers;

• Obstructing, even searching ambulances and medical bags;

• Trapping protesters in ambulances to take them to police stations;

• Allowing protesters to be interrogated without receiving medical treatment first;

• Infiltrating intelligence agents into protest groups, carrying firearms, and not wearing uniforms;

• Arbitrarily arresting and detaining protesters;

• Interrogating protesters with verbal and physical intimidation without legal representation;

• Attacking and forcing journalists to delete their documentation;

• Beating women and making verbal sexual harassment;

• Stripping and parading captured protesters;

• Attempting to hack protestors’ devices;

• Disrupting signals in protest areas;

• Using water cannons without following proper procedures;

• And much more, with no legal consequences.

I’ve already seen how dangerous this is firsthand. My own partner was doxxed by someone who sent their personal information to their company’s email, putting their safety and livelihood at risk. This is the kind of targeted harassment that LGBTQ+ people in Indonesia face daily.

Despite nationwide protests, the government refuses to listen. They continue to silence dissent while pushing forward authoritarian policies.

I cannot continue living in fear—I need to escape to a country where I can be safe, build a future, and live with dignity. Right now, my best options are Germany, Australia, or Japan, where I can seek education, work, and long-term stability.

Leaving my home country is not easy, and I cannot do it alone. Your support will help me cover:

✔️ Visa and travel expenses – Getting out requires funding for visas, flights, and essential travel documents.

✔️ Language courses – To integrate into Germany, Australia, or Japan, I need to reach a sufficient language level, and your support will help me pay for my classes.

✔️ Initial living costs – Arriving in a new country means starting from zero, and I need help covering rent, food, and basic necessities until I can support myself.

✔️ Legal and immigration assistance – Navigating visa and asylum processes requires fees and guidance from professionals.
