My Travel Story

by: Ann Mullee Start Date: Nov 29, 2019 - End Date: Nov 27, 2020
There are few things I am more thrilled to talk about than the English language and culture in general. One of these things, I have spent a lot of time studying. The other, I am eager to learn more about through seeing new places, meeting new people, and placing myself outside of my familiar context; all this to say, I have been hired to teach in Vietnam, and I want to go!

I recently graduated from Chapman University with a degree in English Literature and a minor in Music. I know what your next question is: What are you going to do with that? Teach? The answer is- yes! For now. But my goal is to travel the world, or at least Southeast Asia, while I do so. I have been offered a position to teach English and classical voice lessons in Ho Chi Mihn City, Vietnam. I can’t think of a better way to spend the next phase of my nnlife than sharing my two passions, English and Music, with students. And all the while, I will be learning more about this big, beautiful world.

That said, I need some help getting there. The certification course to teach a secondary language(TESOL) alone costs about $2,500 USD, notwithstanding the cost of moving to a new country and living for the duration of the 3 week certification class without an income.

This job offer is an opportunity to travel, something I am eager to do as much of as possible. It is also an opportunity to live in a new and exciting city and afford the cost of living as a young adult. I am thrilled by the prospect of learning a way of life completely different to the one I have known, meeting people I never otherwise would have crossed paths with, and generally learning more about myself, humanity and nature along the way.

More practically, the weekly hours and income will give me career opportunities I simply would not be afforded stateside. I hope to combine my love of language and music into songwriting, but have never learned how to make the music in my mind into a reality other than me and either a piano or guitar. While abroad, my goal is to use the money I save to earn an online degree in music production.

Please make my dreams of being a teacher of English and a student of the world come true!
