My Travel Story

by: Kelsey Moyes Start Date: Mar 27, 2014 - End Date: Jul 24, 2014
Hello everyone! Thank you for checking out my campaign :) I truly appreciate everyone who has considered funding my passion, and even those who simply took the time to read through my profile.

Throughout high school and college, I have devoted my spare time to helping others. During my senior year of high school I was granted the opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica. During this trip I was a part of two community service projects, the first project was painting a mural in the small squatter village of La Carpio and the second project was painting a small high school in a rural village outside of Sara Piqui. Although I gained a lot of experience volunteering in Costa Rica, the focus was mostly academic. At the end of the school year I was awarded with the school service plaque, a reminder of my hard work to better the community that I lived in.

I will be entering my sophomore year of college, at Gonzaga University, and I am ready for a trip that allows me the freedom and independence to mold my own volunteering schedule. As a prospective business and psychology double major, I hope to graduate college and enter children's psychology for children in less-developed countries. I see this trip as an opportunity for me to find my passion, and give me the strength to pursue this passion.

The program I have chosen - through Volunteering Solutions - is to volunteer at an orphanage in La Ceiba, Honduras. I hope to spend at least two weeks there, or as money allows.

The importance of volunteering here is close to my heart. I was given up for adoption at birth, however, it was unsure what family I would be a part of. Luckily I was adopted shortly after my birth, and was raised by the most loving parents I could have ever hoped for. As an adopted child I understand the struggle to find a basic sense of identity and basic sense of community with others. Although I was never raised without parents, as an orphan, I can only imagine the degree of abandonment and hopelessness the children suffer through.

All I can ask for is your help -- I aspire to bring happiness and laughter to the children and give them a reminder that they are loved and wanted by others.

  • HOW TO DONATE

THERE IS A TURQUOISE BUTTON (DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A BUTTON) THAT SAYS 'FUND CAMPAIGN'. IT IS UNDERNEATH THE STATISTICS OF WHAT I HAVE ALREADY MADE.

    SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION!
  • DEPARTURE DATE CHANGE: December 2014

Unfortunately Lauren and I both ended up having conflicting schedules due to medical challenges and summer employment. Fortunately, we found a date that works perfectly. We will be traveling from December 28, 2014 to January 10, 2015.
