My name is Andrea and I have dreamed of becoming a doctor since I was 14. I am currently studying a Bachelor of Nursing at University as a pathway into medicine. As a nursing student on placement, I find myself constantly watching the doctors. Watching the patient's trust them with their life whether it be by prescribing a new medication or undergoing a surgery, I crave that relationship with my patients. I love being a nurse however I just find myself wanting more. I need to do more, learn more and be more.

Getting into medicine is extremely competitive, so as a way to explore the operating theatre/East Africa and stand out as an applicant, I will be participating in a program called Gap Medics in January 2016. Gap Medics is a program for people aged 16-25 and want to experience a career such as medicine, nursing, midwifery or dentistry in a different country. Gap Medics has programs in a range of different countries such as Poland, Croatia, Thailand and Tanzania.

I will be going to rural Tanzania for a 3 week medical placement. I will spend time shadowing experienced doctors on ward rounds and in surgery, learning about the differences between healthcare at home and in developing countries overseas. In my free time, I will be volunteering at a local orphanage and going on African adventures like a weekend safari.

Your money will help me to pay for my placement with Gap Medics. This includes my hospital placement, accommodation, food and in-country support. More importantly, your money will go towards donations for the rural hospital I will be working in for 3 weeks. This will allow the hospital to purchase essential equipment that is needed for the safety and wellbeing of their patients. Lastly, this money will also help me purchase food & toys for the children at the orphanage. If you're not into donating money, I am more than happy to accept children's toys/colouring books/pencils etc to take over with me.

Please donate as it will allow to me have a life-changing experience and make a difference in the world. Any amount of money, no matter how small will be helpful. Please feel free to message me if you have any questions or you can check the program out at http://www.gapmedics.com.au
