My Travel Story

Hi Everyone,

This upcoming July, I will be going to Zululand to volunteer at an animal conservation in South Africa for two weeks. I will be joining an organisation called the Wildlife Act in Zululand to help the conservation of wildlife across many different reserves.

Every day during the two weeks that I will be there, one of the tasks I shall have the opportunity to experience is locating a range of animals using radio telemetry equipment, which I will be trained to use. The animals that they track are endangered species such as the African Wild Dog, Cheetahs, Black Rhinos and Vultures. Apart from locating these animals and collecting data we will be able to help the darting or trapping and radio collaring of various animal species, the relocation and re-introduction of game, identity tagging of animal, setting and checking of camera traps, game counts, bird ringing and alien plant control. The conservation work that is carried out is essential in order to preserve the lives of these animals.

Volunteering for the conservation of wildlife in Zululand would be a fantastic opportunity for me to not only cooperate with my team and tend to the needs of these animals, but also to have a greater understanding on how real conservation is carried out. As I would very much like to study a Biology related course in university, the exposure in the wild would ultimately help me build a foundation of knowledge on that specific field of study; as wildlife conservation is a very possible option for me within the Biology related course, hopefully it would be able to help me decide if I want to carry forward with it or not. In addition as I am opposed to poaching, this would be a great experience to be on the ground to learn about the methods used and how to try and prevent this problem.

Hope you will be able to help me out!
