My Travel Story

by: Abagael Sykes Start Date: May 4, 2014 - End Date: Aug 31, 2014
90% of all wildlife (including both plants and animals) in Madagascar are unique to island. Unfortunately many of these species are also endangered, through:
Hunting:Mammals such as Lemurs and Tenrecs (an animal resembeling a hedgehog) are hunted for their meat.  The International Pet Trade: Animals including Chameleons, Tortoises and Lemurs are collected for the internation pet trade. The way they are transported and smuggled, means that many of the animals die. Deforestation: Rainforest is cleared for agricultural land. This destroys both habitats and food sources of animals. The numbers of these animals have been decreasing, and as they are unique to the island, if we lose these animals from madagascar, we will lose them forever.

The trip I am taking part in will invovle helping the communities of Madagascar understand how to help their environment, and collecting information which will be used help persuade the Madagasy Government to introduce better protection for their animals and wildlife.

Hopefully in the near future these animals will no longer be endangered!
