My Travel Story

by: Sarah Wrigglesworth Start Date: Nov 20, 2020 - End Date: Aug 19, 2021
So, a long post but I’m not sure if some of you might remember! Last December, I decided that in 2020 I was hoping to start chipping away on my life Bucket List, and head to Africa into an experience of a lifetime and volunteer in Ghana!

Then an reoccurrence of a spinal injury I had had operated on in 2016! This meant I spent time between Xmas and New Year morphined up in hospital, then on painkillers for most of 2020! Not the easiest thing with three young kids at home!

This meant fundraising and the likelihood of me even been able to get there was slim! Then came covid-19 and the trip was cancelled anyways! Late Summer 2020 I had my 2nd spinal surgery operation and touch wood all is good painwise! Back working as a specialist tutor & keeping busy with the three kids!

Then recently I recieved the exciting news, that the volunteering opportunity has been rearranged for a place called Zanzibar!

Zanzibar is located in Southern Africa. The country has been torn apart from political differences and different religious beliefs. The country as a whole is getting back on its feet again now, and it’s down to schemes like this that are helping.

On this trip I will be working in a school, supporting teachers and staff with there classes some who have upto 150 pupils per class! I will be in the class room assisting the teachers, running sports activities and I will also be getting my hands dirty doing some basic building/maintenance works around the school. For me, to experience this opportunity, I need to raise £2200 (£2310 includes site fee) and I will be doing a number of different things to raise as much money as I can to reach my target, as well as self funding as much as possible!

I’ll also be collecting items to take over for the school but more importantly, to donate to the pupils that literally have nothing. There is a rough outline on the donations required, they are as follows (Sanitary & hygiene products/school recorded/pencils/paper /sports equipment)

I have a few ideas on how to raise some money, these are games where we can all play online to get everyone involved! I would appreciate any donations, or any other ideas in how to raise money.

Thanks
