Rainforest and Coastal Conservation Project- Jozani Forest
My Travel Story
Located in the Jozani Forest are animals so unique, they cant be found anywhere else on Earth. I am working with IVHQ and local organizations to support UN goal #14 (sustainable use of marine resources) and #15 (biodiversity protection of terrestrial resources.)
The three major componets to my work in Zanzibar are as follows:
1. Re-planting of various fruit, mangrove and eucalyptus trees to bring back a habitat and food source, especially for the endangered Red Colobus Monkeys.
2. Working with a reptile sanctuary, holding a strong focus on sea turtles. They have their own hatchery, where they work on egg relocation and coral reef health. The shores have experienced near extinction of sharks and the goal is to prevent that with turtles before it's too late. Turtles face struggles such as bycatch, and excessive poaching causing populations to diminish.
3. Lastly, one of the most important impacts will be education in local villages, as well as youth education in schools. In this area of Tanzania the only option for water is bottled, thus the main concern from these communities is the plastic bottle pollution. The team I am with will be collecting bottles from these communities to recycle, reuse and dispose of properly. The locals already working on these projects are so passionate about what they do. If everyone was on board they would be truly unstopable.
I will be following up with pictures and videos so you can watch the action taking place due to your contribution. Thankyou so much for taking the time to support this cause, I cant wait to see what this will bring for the local communites of Zanzibar!
